Volume & Surface Area

Find the volume and surface area of labeled solids, from stacks of unit cubes to prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres. Pyramids and cones show both the true height and the slant height, so students practice choosing the right one.

Solids

Unit cube problems are drawn as stacks to count, using small whole numbers no matter which number size is chosen. Pentagonal, hexagonal, and octagonal prisms either show the base area, so students apply volume = base area × length, or show the side and apothem, so students find the base area first. Choose which with "Polygon prism base" below.

Challenge: composite solids

Composite solids ask for volume only. L-shaped blocks hide two side lengths, so students find them first.
