Find the area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and pentagons drawn on a grid. Four levels build from counting squares to boxing in shapes that have no sides on the grid lines.
Pick one level or several. With more than one, problems are split evenly between them and ordered easiest first.
Find the area of each shape. Each small square on the grid is 1 square unit.
Each solution uses the "box it in" method: the dashed rectangle fits snugly around the shape, and the shaded pieces outside the shape are subtracted from the rectangle's area. Splitting the shape into rectangles and right triangles and adding them gives the same answer, so any method that reaches the correct area is right.
